Apple Should Help Develop Open Office

Apple could seriously damage Microsoft by doing one thing. Put a team of top developers on Open Office. By donating that time to the open source project, it would quickly surpass Microsoft Office and the one remaining reason to keep Windows would go away. It wouldn't cost that much. Just 4-5 programmers. And of course, they would ensure that it always ran smoothly on Macs.

Think about it Apple.

Yes Soup, but it still bears the Microsoft label and is expensive. The point is to stop the monopoly and allow document creation/interchange to be more generic. If MS will support open document standards, then everything is cool. They're just another player and can compete in the market like everyone else.

Your argument was that Apple should fund the development of Open Office for free, in hopes that it would somehow make traditional PC users convert to using Macs. Well think about it, dewey, Apple already has one of the most widely used text programs available for Mac OS on a mainstream level. So considering the gross profit, they don't lose a cent. So why in the world would they fund Open Office, especially since it's also already available to download for Mac OS for free?

When I switched to Apple, I made sure I could run Microsoft Office, and the only reason for that is everyone else is using Microsoft Office! I don't hate Microsoft, but I love everything about my Mac. And my iPod nano. And my iPod Shuffle. And my iPhone.
