This country has been lacking great leadership for some time

By most accounts, Reagan was a great President. Beloved, respected and effective on many account, even if you don't agree with his politics. Bush was was successful in Iraq I, then kind of faded. Bill Clinton himself said that his Presidency didn't accomplish much. He had no war to preside over and the economy was booming on dot-com hype and reduced military spending. Bush II had an opportunity to be a great President but squandered it with mis-steps all along the way as pointed out n the article linked below. Note that the article is over two years old and was written before Obama was really in office. Nonetheless, it states truth, not opinion. And Obama? Well, he will definitely go down in history as the first Black President. the economy will recover, but mostly because of cycles, not any particular policy or brilliance. It is possible that his Healthcare plan could escalate into something really good and useful, but so far he has only taken it one small step beyond what Hillary Clinton did. He has time left, but he has plenty of opportunity to fail as well.

So where are the next great leaders going to come from? We have Tea Partiers idolizing a quitter governor of one of our smallest states. we have Democrats like Pelosi and Harry Reid who never quite figured out how to handle the power thrust into their hands. If Obama steps down in 2012, for whatever reason, what does American politics look like?

Who would you most like to see as our next President and why? Of everyone I look at currently, I like Romney. Surprized?

Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty & Bobby Jindahl (except for his terrible speech in February) are the future of the party. Newt Gingrich is brilliant, but has baggage. Sarah Palin is sincere and intelligent, but needs to really be seriously boning up on facts and info if she is to be a serious candidate in the future.

Reading these opinions makes me wonder something... what does the 'country' want? In the last election, the only true politicians with ample experience were Hillary, Biden, McCain and Thompson. Yet all were rejected eventually. Maybe all this events of the past 16 years will help focus us as a population to look at real credentials. Bush promised deliverance for conservatives yet did nothing on the issues he ran on (abortion, gay rights, etc). Obama clearly won on the notion of Change but hardly anyone recognizes change anywhere yet. I think next election I'll ignore party affiliation and look at credentials. I prefer a successful, well educated, well spoken individual to run our country.

Here is another way of looking at it.

Bush senior won because he was an incumbent at the end of a good presidency and the Democrats couldn't muster a good competitor.
Clinton won because of Perot.
Bush won because of Clinton's sexual missteps.
Obama won because of Bush's failings

In other words, we haven't really elected a President on his or her own merits for a long time. I'd like to be part of a movement that strives towards that.
