North Korea is extreme to the extreme

North Korea is the most extreme example of harsh dictatorship in the world today. A factory manager was executed for making an international phone call this week. It is truly a shame when a government is so afraid of its people finding out about how corrupt it is that it takes this kind of action.

I think North Korea should be the next focus of international sanctions. What do you think?

Couldn't we beam CNN across the whole country so the people of North Korea can see the rest of the world? They'd tune in. Wanna bet?

International sanctions sound modern but really it is the equivalent of a medieval siege. Is besieging a country really the way to help its oppressed people?

I'm not sure the N. Koreans WANT to be free. They may NEED to be free. I say this b/c for lack of better words, they have been brain washed. And if you put any kind of embargo/sanctions against them, it won't have any impact on the citizens or the government. The citizens feel "safe"... and "safe" meaning they do not know how to live with out the dictatorship or being told what to do. If you tell them their government rations are cut, that's ok to them, but doesn't create resentment against their government, after all, any outspokenness about the government means your family is enslaved and eventually killed. Any kind of action can be circumvented through China and would not be effected.

Too many case studies have come about when foreign entities get in the business of other governments, it just doesn't work the way you would think it would. The trick is, you have to figure out what kind of change the citizens want and would tolerate then approach from that angle (and the tolerable approach is not big war machines). It's sad, but a loosing proposition... we have to wait for the wall to be torn down by themselves, just like the eastern communist block collapsed. No intervention needed, just some time.
