In April 2004, George W Bush, stood in front of the American people and said he if he were ever to do do wire tapping it would require a court order. This was of course three or so days AFTER he had already authorized illegal wiretapping. I have nothing to hide, but having the government spying on my private conversations with no proper authorization to do so violates my rights. For approximately half of the U.S. population, it is an article of faith that “Bush lied, people died.” The tired clichè was making the rounds again this week after the Select Committee on Intelligence published a new report titled, “Intelligence Activities Relating to Iraq.” The report was formally released by the committee’s chairman, Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-WV), who said it was further proof that President Bush and his administration had “repeatedly presented intelligence as fact when it was unsubstantiated, contradicted or even nonexistent.”

The report that Sen. Rockefeller is interpreting for the American people, however, disagrees with the senator. On the subject of Iraq’s nuclear weapons program, the report says that the president’s statements were “generally substantiated by intelligence community estimates.” On the subject of biological and chemical weapons, the president’s statements were “substantiated by intelligence information.” On weapons of mass destruction in general, statements were “generally substantiated by intelligence information.” On ballistic missiles capable of delivering WMDs, claims were “generally substantiated by intelligence information.” Even on the issue of Saddam Hussein’s ties to terrorism, the Bush administration’s claims were “substantiated by intelligence estimates.” Indeed, we can’t find the part where “Bush lied!” It seems that the only person who misrepresented a report was Mr. Rockefeller himself.

If moonbats had ears, we would remind them that in the run-up to the Iraq War, Congress was reading the same intelligence reports as President Bush, a fact that nobody understands better than the Intelligence Committee Chairman himself. In 2002, Rockefeller said, “There has been some debate over how ‘imminent’ a threat Iraq poses. I do believe Iraq poses an imminent threat. I also believe after September 11, that question is increasingly outdated... To insist on further evidence could put some of our fellow Americans at risk. Can we afford to take that chance? I do not think we can.” Having made the right choice then, Rockefeller is trying to disown it now by pinning the “blame” on the Bush administration just as victory in Iraq is a near possibility. It doesn’t make much sense to us, but then, Democrats rarely do.

When one considers that it is official documents like the one in question—not New York Times editorials—that historians will use to chronicle and judge President Bush’s actions, it seems likely that posterity will judge George W. Bush more kindly than his contemporaries have, and that Democrats will once again find themselves on the wrong side of history.

You can choose not to believe the obvious if it suits your needs. There are many people from inside the Bush administration who tell stories of how they decided to go into Iraq early on, then trumped up all kinds of ways to get people behind them, including ignoring the reports the CIA gave them and using only those things that suited their agenda. You will never admit to it or believe it because if you did, you would have to denounce your master, Lord Bush. But his administration still remains the most corrupt in history (more corruptions scandals than any POTUS ever) but in typical head-in-the-sand fashion Republicans continue to worship him like a God.

I think President Bush was an excellent president. Everyone was for the war when we went in because Saddam needed ousting. The only mistake he made was under estimating the guts of the bad guys. We should have sent more troops in at the beginning. He, in his first six years was true to his words - he kept America safe. The last two years, under a liberal house and senate and media pressure, Bush did disappoint me on the illegal immigrant front as well as some smaller issues. The economy is crumbling because of all the loans and credit given out by companies who were following the laws and guidelines set by Bill Clinton in the 90’s. People bought houses they could not afford. It finally caught up with those people during Bush’s watch. In 2003 he tried to initiate reform but was blocked by the Dems. 911 occurred nine months after Bush took office. Clinton had chances to do something about terrorism but did nothing. During the Clinton years, he cut our defense as well as our intelligence. We were vulnerable due to liberal cut backs and the “can’t we all just get along” attitude liberals have with everyone. It bit us on the butt. Obama has recently hired a person to take over the CIA. This person has no experience. In the hostile world we live in I am sure an attack will now be more likely to happen. The media has branded Bush as a failure and all the sheep, who look at the TV as if it was their shepherd, believe that Bush is a failure. If Obama was to walk on water the headlines would be “Obama is our savior.” If Bush was to walk on water the headlines would be “Bush Can’t swim” The left-leaning liberal media sucks! Bush was blamed for Katrina. First of all mother nature made Katrina not Bush. Government starts at the local level not at the President. History will redeem President Bush in that he is one of the few leaders who understands the larger picture. He knows what calamities await the world if it engages in appeasement and deserts an ally in order to buy an illusory peace. We will recognize what he did long after he is gone.

I think I have spelled this out to you before Tig about the financial mess. Again I ask you to read what Bush did in 2003 and in what McCain & Bush tried to do in 2005 & 2008 but was stopped by the libs.

Financial Crisis: How We Got Here
by the NY Times

1977: Pres. Jimmy Carter signs the Community Reinvestment Act into Law. The law pressured financial institutions to extend home loans to those who would otherwise not qualify. The Premise: Home ownership would improve poor and crime-ridden communities and neighborhoods in terms of crime, investment, jobs, etc.

Results: Statistics bear out that it did not help.

How did the government get so deeply involved in the housing market?
Answer: Bill Clinton wanted it that way.

1992: Republican representative Jim Leach (IO) warned of the danger that Fannie and Freddie were changing from being agencies of the public at large to money machines for the principals and the stockholding few.

1993: Clinton extensively rewrote Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac's rules turning the quasi-private mortgage-funding firms into semi-nationalized monopoies dispensing cash and loans to large Democratic voting blocks and handing favors, jobs and contributions to political allies. This potent mix led inevitably to corruption and now the collapse of Freddie and Fannie.

1994: Despite warnings, Clinton unveiled his National Home-Ownership Strategy which broadened the CRA in ways congress never intended.

1995: Congress, about to change from a Democrat majority to Republican, Clinton orders Robert Rubin's Treasury Dept to rewrite the rules. Robt. Rubin's Treasury reworked rules, forcing banks to satisfy quotas for sub-prime and minority loans to get a satisfactory CRA rating. The rating was key to expansion or mergers for banks. Loans began to be made on the basis of race and little else.

1997 - 1999: Clinton, bypassing Republicans, enlisted Andrew Cuomo, then Secretary of Housing and Urban Developement, allowing Freddie and Fannie to get into the sub-prime market in a BIG way. Led by Rep. Barney Frank and Sen. Chris Dodd, congress doubled down on the risk by easing capital limits and allowing them to hold just 2.5% of capital to back their investments vs. 10% for banks. Since they could borrow at lower rates than banks their enterprises boomed.

With incentives in place, banks poured billions in loans into poor communities, often "no doc", "no income", requiring no money down and no verification of income. Worse still was the cronyism: Fannie and Freddie became home to out-of work-politicians, mostly Clinton Democrats. 384 politicians got big campaign donations from Fannie and Freddie. Over $200 million had been spent on lobbying and political activities. During the 1990's Fannie and Freddie enjoyed a subsidy of as musch as $182 Billion, most of it going to principals and shareholders, not poor borrowers as claimed.

Did it work? Minorities made up 49% of the 12.5 million new homeowners but many of those loans have gone bad and the minority homeownership rates are shrinking fast.

1999: New Treasury Secretary, Lawrence Summers, became alarmed at Fannie and Freddie's excesses. Congress held hearings the ensuing year but nothing was done because Fannie and Freddie had donated millions to key congressmen and radical groups, ensuring no meaningful changes would take place. "We manage our political risk with the same intensity that we manage our credit and interest rate risks," Fannie CEO Franklin Raines, a former Clinton official and current Barack Obama advisor, bragged to investors in 1999.

2000: Secretary Summers sent Undersecretary Gary Gensler to Congress seeking an end to the "special status". Democrats raised a ruckus as did Fannie and Freddie, headed by politically connected CEO's who knew how to reward and punish. "We think that the statements evidence a contempt for the nation's housing and mortgage markets" Freddie spokesperson Sharon McHale said. It was the last chance during the Clinton era for reform.

2001: Republicans try repeatedly to bring fiscal sanity to Fannie and Freddie but Democrats blocked any attempt at reform; especially Rep. Barney Frank and Sen.Chris Dodd who now run key banking committees and were huge beneficiaries of campaign contributions from the mortgage giants.

2003: Bush proposes what the NY Times called "the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago". Even after discovering a scheme by Fannie and Freddie to overstate earnings by $10.6 billion to boost their bonuses, the Democrats killed reform.

2005: Then Fed chairman Alan Greenspan warns Congress: "We are placing the total financial system at substantial risk". Sen. McCain, with two others, sponsored a Fannie/Freddie reform bill and said, "If congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system and the economy as a whole". Sen. Harry Reid accused the GOP ;of trying to "cripple the ability of Fannie and Freddie to carry out their mission of expanding homeownership" The bill went nowhere.

2007: By now Fannie and Freddie own or guarantee over HALF of the $12 trillion US mortgage market. The mortgage giants, whose executive suites were top-heavy with former Democratic officials, had been working with Wall St. to repackage the bad loans and sell them to investors. As the housing market fell in '07, subprime mortgage portfolios suffered major losses. The crisis was on, though it was 15 years in the making.

2008: McCain has repeatedly called for reforming the behemoths, Bush urged reform 17 times. Still the media have repeated Democrats' talking points about this being a "Republican" disaster. A few Republicans are complicit but Fannie and Freddie were created by Democrats, regulated by Democrats, largely run by Democrats and protected by Democrats. That's why taxpayers are now being asked for $700 billion!!

Postscript: ACORN is one of the principle beneficiaries of Fannie/ Freddie's slush funds. They are currently under indictment or investigation in many states. Barack Obama served as their legal counsel, defending their activities for several years.
