Shouldn't members of the 'Christian Right' be FOR programs that help the less fortunate?
Seems like an oxymoron, 'Christian Right.' What would Jesus do? Vote down every program proposed that is any helps the less fortunate, the sick or the disadvantaged? I don't think so...

i have given food and clothing to the poor. i have helped re-build houses in hurricane decimated areas. i have given generous sums of money to women who were suddenly widowed. however God requires us to be responsible with our blessings. so i do not agree to funding "programs" that are bloated with bureaucy, and designed to garner power. i do not feel i should have my earnings siezed and arbitrarily redistributed so a welfare bum who can cancel out my vote can afford cigs, booze & lottery tickets.

That's actually a good response RW. Well said. You're basically saying you are all for helping the less advantaged, but you don't think the federal government should do it? That's fair.
Since we agree there, how are we going to stop sickness in the cities? Do you have enough money to provide healthcare for a large number of inner city folks? Sometimes churches ban together to help these folks, but healthcare is very expensive.

Welfare does not pay for alcohol, tobacco, or lottery. Hmmmmmm seems like helping the less fortunate isn't against your standards after all.

The right always uses this exaggeration so I forgave him that. I have never met a Democrat who want to provide 'handouts' but we keep getting accused of that as well.

never said i was against helping the less fortunate. i just dont feel it is my responsibility to enable lazy slobs. in on numerous occasions i have witnessed individuals purchasing junk food with food stamps and than whipping out cash for thier booze and lottery tickets.

But republicans voter against every federal bill that helps the less fortunate like tax cuts for the poor, welfare for those who need it, healthcare for those who can;t afford it.

hey tig ya must think i'm really dumb. the republicans are against cutting taxes on the poor because they don't pay any taxes. even if there is a deduction from their paycheck they get it and more back when they file. as i overheard a low life acquaintance once boast he not only did not pay any taxes, he also got a refund from the government. any "tax cut" for the poor is a handout. what needs to be done is business taxes especially those on small business need to be cut drastically so we can afford to pay the unskilled higher wages.

No I don't think you're dumb. and I didn't mean people so poor they don't pay taxes. I meant the non-wealthy. The ones int he 15-28% bracket. The ones Obama gave 300B in tax cuts to last year.

Again, Tig, if the States want to create charities, that is fine but the document that has kept us straight as the driven snow is the US Constitution and there will be no charity from federal taxpayers money. Try to remember that!

Um, A, that's kinda what I said... in my first comment back to RW.
Problem is, sometimes the problems become country-wide. People cross over state lines. If you have healthcare coverage in your state but next door they don't guess who's coming to dinner.
Hawaii doesn;t have that problems because it has no direct borders. But as Rush found out, the will take care of visitors as well. If you lived there would you be crying out that you shouldn't have to spend your hard earned tax dollars keeping Rush healthy?
