Sorry, Luther - vehemently disagree there. The crazies and the idiots' right to bear arms infringes on my rights to life, liberty, and the fruit of my labor.

So crazies and idiots should only be entitled to whatever level of self defense the rest of us feel is appropriate for them?

I'll go this far down that path; if someone proves themselves to be a danger to society then they should be stripped of their basic rights and locked away. However, until that individual can reasonably be considered a danger then they should ABSOLUTELY be allowed to exercise their rights.

Well I suppose we need to carefully define crazies and idiots - I'm not talking about people with whom I disagree, I'm talking about the mentally unstable. IMO emotional stability is vital to the ability to bear arms, and some demo of such could be required just as we demonstrate that we can see in order to drive. Yup, before you say it - I do see a trazillion civil rights problems with this argument - so I don't mean it literally. I mean the "spirit" of it.

I think with every right come responsibilities. I think someone's right to bear arms has to be balanced against my right not to be killed by a lunatic whose emotional stability does NOT allow him/her to bear arms responsibility. I think my right to life and safety trump the lunatic's right to bear arms. Considering all that, I don't mind people wanting to bear arms - go right ahead.

Let's go further. Why should a lunatic's emotional instability allow him/her to be allowed to get married, have children, vote or do anything. Lets have the DNC go round up all the lunatics and lock them away. Contact the White House and maybe they'll establish a lunatic hot line and a Lunatic Czar to determine who they are. That's the liberal way wanting to government control and making all the decisions as to who is worthy. Wait there's a knock at my door, noooo not me.....

Oh please. Get the spirit of what I'm saying. I don't think an emotionally unstable person should be having children but a) we can't stop that, and b) that doesn't impact my own child's safety. The same lunatic with a gun impacts our safety. Isn't it accepted that a person's freedom ends where another person's freedom starts?

So you're saying the 2nd amendment only applies to militias. That's a common argument or at least was until the Heller decision last year cleared the air.

Personally, I think it's a pretty logical read. The militia clause incorporates the amendment to the purpose of the Constitution as expressed in the preamble. The operative clause expresses that the right to keep and bear arms preexists the constitution and shall not be infringed. This reading of the 2A was expressed in the Cruikshank case 125 years ago and completely clarified in the Heller decision. Beyond that there has been truckloads of scholarly letters written on the subject.

Depends. Do I have to worry about protecting myself or my family from an enemy with tanks or armored transports.

Different weapons have different uses and different cost/benefit functions. The only really good reason I can see owning a bazooka is for a collectible. They are pretty much useless for home defense or for hunting but having one might be kind of cool. Same goes for private ownership of heavy artillery, mechanized artillery, fighter aircraft, combat ships and nukes. But let's get back to the "real world".

The big argument from the anti-gun crowd is about automatic weapons and high volume clips. The fact of the matter is that criminals DO have access to this kind of weapon and HAVE used such weapons against both the public and the police. It only makes sense to be as well armed any enemy you can reasonably anticipate so I certainly see a need for what is commonly referred to as an "assault weapon" in any respectable private armory.

If the other 'human being' is a drugged up killer intent on stealing my property or harming my family and he sees I have a bazooka that kills 'human beings', I am sure he might be deterred and go to the nearest liberal anti-self defense household so he can rob/kill/rape who he wants with impunity.

That rabbet dog that was after my kids I shot with my 44 didn’t look like a human, that snake I shot that want to bit one of my kids didn’t look like a human. Nor did the coyote, but that son-of-a bitch that broke into my home was. Don’t have to worry about him anymore. I always wonder about a human being who is unwilling to be holding something in their hands that's can be used to defend their family.

Raddit dog may be odd, Snakes are not when you live in the country and take you kids fishing. The coyotes I went hunting for. It paid real good. Made about 1000 dollars in about week and a half. My house was broken into when I lived in the city.

Those are pretty lame excuses. Defense of the home is NOT a valid reason to own guns. Just look at ANY statistical study on how many home invasions were stopped or prevented because the owner had a gun as compared to those same guns being used by kids to commit crimes or for domestic violence. The ratios are overwhelming. C'mon gun-nuts. I am not for banning guns, but you guys have to get a better story. That one is so lame and ridiculous that you are hurting your cause.

Where did I say I was happy about killing someone. I felt bad for months about it. I will do it again if I have to and hope I never have to. My gun stays locked up until I go to bed when I put it beside the bed and the alarm is set. It also has a trigger lock on it so if the kids get a hold of it they can not pull the trigger.

I'm with you, tigger. Life is hard enough and dangerous enough without living with weapons. A gun in the house would not make me feel any safer.

I agree with you Cindy, a gun in my house wouldn't make me feel any safer. I have two, unloaded and locked away, no chance to lock and load before an intruder could do me harm. But I think it should be your choice to have a gun or not inside your home.

Too expensive! It is just an 'animal' trying to bite/eat/kill you, you should just kill it as best you can to save your ass!

I'll tell you what, you buy me a tranquilizing gun and I might use it, until then I will think about the possibility of multiple 'bad guys' breaking into my home and me using the tranquilizer dart gun with ONE SHOT and ask them to wait while I reload the dart.

Use your head! The idea of a criminal confronting a home owner with a multiple shot weapon is still the best deterrent known to man. If all the bad guys knew that we only had a 'tranquilizer' gun waiting for them, do you think that would keep crime down?
Ya know what? You dial 911 and wait for the cops the next time someone is breaking into your house or you are getting mugged and shout that fact at the bad guy. In the mean time, I will pop a couple rounds at those 'nice' fellows and we will see if the bad guys continue coming in or will they 'withdraw' trailing some blood.

Remember the police are not there to protect you, that is your #1 job on this planet, the police will only come to chalk around the bodies and write their reports. You are the #1 person to 'prevent' crime against your person/family. Call the pizza delivery guy and 911 and you will have pizza waiting at your house for the police.
