Jailbreaking An iPhone is Breaking It...

So (round), I have had my iPhone for over a year now, and it is quite obvious that I thoroughly enjoy the phone in its current state. It actually does less than my previous phones (I have been a smartphone lover since they were called pocket PCs), but it does everything so elegantly and smoothly that I doubt that I will ever go back to another WinMo device....or any other OS, for that matter.

The rub is this: Apple has an excellent marketing ploy that holds the rest of us back. Think cars. When a manufacturer goes through a major vehicle revision, it is a big deal, and sales tend to spike. Why. Because that car hasn't been "new" in 3-7 years, depening on the popularity of the model. Every year has refreshes, but not major changes. Power sunroofs are added. Maybe they offer a sport class. Always incremental changes up until a major refit.

This is what the 3GS is. The Edge to 3G was a major refit of the line. The body was changes relatively dramatically. The guts are very different (as witnessed by the lack of MMS hardware capabilities, sheer speeds/CPU, etc...). While still unmistakenly an iPhone, you can immediately spot the differences between the two. The 3Gs and 3G are essentially the same phone with a different CPU, camera and memory. The internals are relatively unchanged.

Except for 32GB of memory and focusing, the 3G can do everything that the 3Gs can. Literally. Jailbreaking the phone allows for video and compass support. Jailbreaking also allows for background apps and MMS BEFORE AT&T figues out how much they are going to charge for a service that is already included in the messaging plans (try it and a lawsuit comes...I signed the contract too).

I don't want to spend $300 on a phone that can already do all of the same things that this one can. I also don't want to ruin what is essentially a great phone with minor missing parts. Finally, I am getting sick and tired or Apple controlling what I can do on a device that I own. Say what you want about WinMo or Symbian, but both give you far more control over your own device.

Should I jailbreak my iPhone?

Apple sold you the phone. You can do what you care to with it. Apple has every right to decide what it's warranty covers.

Of course you should. Don't even think about it! As Cindy mentioned, it's yours, do what you want.
Their are moral questions you should ask, because you will have access to thousands of apps/tunes/movies that you would otherwise pay for in iTunes, but apart from that a jailbroken iPhone can be truly personalised any way you chose.

Please research the many ways you can jailbreak the device though and ensure you are confident with instructions given. Their are some very knowledgeable people with fantastic videos on YouTube that I couldn't have jailbroken mine without!
