Yes. I just got back from my Bible study group. It helps myfaith by building my relationship with Christ. And it provides me with a strong foundation for how I should live my life.

As a piece of literature, it has withstood the test of time.

Transformitive? Well, sure, I guess. It's not really fair to compare the Bible with other literary works as it really has no competition in the west. Book of Mormon? Dianetics? Most western religions seem to have decided to use it in one form or another but HOW they use it can vary greatly, as you know, Cindy. The Hasidim use it to dictate their wardrobe and diet, the Baptists use it to justify the Iraq war, ( read Hagee), the Catholics use it in ridged ceramony while the Episcopalians (sp?) have a more relaxed approach... For now at least.
When one looks at the incredibly diverse interpretations of this collection of books, one might think each religious group is working from a different text. How can the same book be used by one Mega-church to justify stoning gays while at the same time be sung in celebration by a homosexual Anglican priest?
I wonder if Constintine had access to Dickens rather then a collection of old Jewish scrolls would this now be the best of times rather then the worst?

Really? That's your response? I should have said "end of days" but either way it was just a foot note to the main point. I keep forgeting why I stopped posting here but now I remember: chocolate is yummy! I like movies. Ben Stiller is really funny. Enjoy the rest of your summer, Reverend.

McG, I had several other thoughts in response to your reflections, but did not take the time or effort here to respond in full, in part because while I certainly was glad to see your return to Floort, your point of view on this subject is conflicts with mine, I feared an amicable conversation would be impossible. Your sarcastic response affirmed my suspicions.
For starters, I don't think any same, Christian fellowship truly condones stoning gay people today.
I grant you that different religious groups use the Bible in different ways, but I still mantain it is transformative if within these communities, people are led to live more charitible and loving lives by the reading of the Bible.

sigh. My response was, I think , completly appropriate to your one lined thoughtless comment. That you wouldn't want to open a dialog with someone who might not see the Good Book with the same rosey tint is frankly not surprising. I do cop to the sarcasm which was again used to illiustrate a point: that being Floorts seem to be very shallow and simple minded these days. Many of them anyway and a thoughtful discussion between adults is all but possible. I could have saved myself the trouble as your comments make better examples than my sarcasm ever could. Of course those who might pick up on something like that are probably long gone by now.
You go on preaching to the choir and keep your school marmish take on the Bible in it's hemeticly sealed box of easy answers. I'm not here to change your mind, though I once thought I could open it a little.
I would add that you of all posters should know better then to assume I'd be in any way disrepectful to a serious discussion of faith. You only have to look back to my many postings ok the subject. As a practicing Catholic and life long student of world religions I take a bit of exception at your quick and ready dismisal of my thoughts on this issue, but I'm not surprised.

sigh. can't we be friends? cant we enjoy an adult and mature sharing of our faith without cutting to
non-edifying remarks? I guess I did not ever realize that you are a "practicing Catholic." I may have
misunderstood your comments to imply a disdain for all things faith. Just reread your coments above.
If you are a Catholic, we share a certain commonality that would, ideally, contribute to kinship and mutual
understanding.
I don't mean to be simplistic in my articulation of my faith. I am seminary schooled and have a theological
mind. but, my faith is simple and deep, and perhaps does not lend itself to cerebral language.
Anyway, I do covet your friendship and understanding, and forgiveness as well, if I misread and seemed
intolerant of your ideas.
Back to the floort at hand: based on your comments, I gathered that you have little use for the Bible. Did I
misunderstand you? Could you share with us in what way the Bible informs your life?

McG, I do agree with you that we have to share this site with young people. Not all the floorts are deep and important to all, but many do spur interesting conversations, in which you would make a valuable contribution.
