Children exposed: Violence in the Media

The story is that there is so much violence in video games that it should be outlawed.  Many people claim that the interactivity causes aggression in a person's behavior.  Studies show that this is true and is limited.  This feeling of aggression, is temporary.  The idea is that violence in video games should be banned.

I'm going to release several other Floots in this category on this topic.  This is for a persuasive speech.

I believe that a video game with violence in it is no reason for a video game to be banned.  I believe that responsibility should be the way to keep your kids from playing a game, not laziness.

I agree. I think parents should be more responsible for what their children are doing.
I also believe if a child has a stable home life they are less likely to have these feelings of anger or aggression. But that's a different topic.

Interesting topic. What bothers me isn't the games. What bothers me is our mentality. Why is it that 95% of all video games involve killing something to win? What has happened to society where this attitude prevails? Game manufacturers make these kind of games because we want to buy them.

Your right. Our youth do not know how to separate the fantasy of the video games from every day life. They take what they see and emulate it.

I believe the game makers have taken responsibility by labeling the games according age appropriateness. Responsible parents should know and understand these ratings.

I don't care about the studies that they put out there, violence in video games is not causing children to turn to it. The rating system is good the way it is, if parents don't want their kids to be prone to violence they shouldn't let them play rated "m" when they're ten.

exaggerated. I grew up on the likes of street fighter and DOA and have never been in a fight in my 22 years.

I believe that it is not the violence in a video game, nor is it the violence in a cartoon that causes aggressive behavior. There are also studies that claim video games, movies, SPORTS, are all a healthy outlet for everyone's aggressive tendencies.
Outlaw video games, then what is next? Books with violent content? Or what about football? NO. Aggressive behavior is due to genetics and your environment, in my opinion.
My concern is teaching children to take responsibility for their actions and that begins at home. My husband is a teacher and most of the time when he gives a detention, it is for aggressive behavior in the classroom. (This is a school in an upper class neighborhood so the theory that only poor kids from poor homes, uneducated parents, does not hold with me). Many of these kids will refuse to take the detention. Mom and/or Dad calls the school and accuses my husband and the school of "bullying" their child. By doing this, the parent is "telling" the child, don't take responsibility for your inappropriate behavior. Blame someone else.

Video games have become a convenient escape allowing parents the time to focus their time and energy on themselves instead of quality time with their children. Tv and videogames are no substitute for real interactions and relationship building. Kids learn by example which should be shown by the parents.

Absolutely right, though good luck with that. How do you hold the parents responsible? It is very easy to pass the blame on to the video game companies (music companies, fast food chains, etc.), but hey, it's your kid, not theirs.

I agree. I do not think that it is the violence in itself that is a problem for our children it is the time spent using these video games. We only have to look around us to see acts of violence everywhere. Our children are subject to violence nearly every day whether it be psychological or physical. We cannot protect our children from things that are part of the world we live in. We , as parents, should be more careful as to what our children are doing and we should be a little more present in their lives. As all things, they need to be used with moderation. I do not think that outlawing will solve the problem. In some cases this solution leads people and children to the search for ways of replacing it with other things.

Violent content will never be completely removed from any media outlet, it just is impossible. So you are absolutely right, it is up to the parents to supervise what their children are exposed to. If you don't want your child to become indifferent to violent acts, then teach them, show them, help them learn right from wrong. But most importantly, be consistent with your teachings and show them the very important value of respect toward others and principally toward themselves.
